Sanson Tragedy Deepens: Children Killed in Fire Named as August, Hugo, and Goldie; Community Rallies Behind Grieving Mother
SANSON, MANAWATŪ – The tragic dimensions of the fatal house fire in Sanson have been wrenchingly clarified with the identification of the three young victims. The children—August (7), Hugo (5), and Goldie (1)—were the light and love of their mother’s life, who is now enduring what loved ones describe as an “unimaginable loss.”
The names of the children were revealed on a Givealittle page established to support their mother, whose entire world has been shattered by the devastating event that claimed the lives of her three young children and their father. The immense grief is compounded by the fact that she also lost her home and all her possessions in the blaze.
Unimaginable Loss and Community Response
The Givealittle page quickly became a focal point for the nation’s sympathy, raising over $136,000 in a rapid outpouring of community generosity. The support reflects the profound shock and sadness felt across Aotearoa for the mother navigating this double tragedy—the loss of her children and home.
The page articulated the mother’s desperate situation: “In the midst of this unimaginable grief, she also lost her home and everything she owned. She is facing the hardest journey possible, stripped of her physical security, while navigating the deepest emotional pain.”
The children—August, Hugo, and Goldie—were described simply as “the light and love of her life,” a sentiment echoed by neighbours earlier in the week who remembered the children as “happy, sweet kids.”
Recovery and Identification Efforts
The official recovery effort at the devastated Sanson property has been slow and meticulous, reflecting the intensity of the blaze and the need for forensic accuracy.
Manawatū Area Commander Inspector Ross Grantham confirmed that the body of the adult victim, the children’s father, was removed earlier in the investigation. RNZ understands the father to be Dean Field.
Further heartbreaking updates were provided as police confirmed that the bodies of two children were recovered on Sunday night. The family was given a moment of solace amidst the grief as they were able to bless the remains of the two recovered children with a karakia (Māori prayer).
However, the agonizing search for the body of the third child, believed to be Goldie, is still ongoing. Police investigators and forensic teams continue their painstaking work at the scene, determined to locate the remaining victim and bring closure to the family. Inspector Grantham confirmed the complexities of the search to Morning Report, underscoring the destructive power of the fire.
Ongoing Investigation into Cause
The scene remains under police guard as the investigation into the circumstances and cause of the fire continues. While police earlier confirmed they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths, the investigation now centres on determining the source and progression of the catastrophic blaze.
Police, in partnership with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) investigators, will be working to establish a definitive timeline of the event, analysing structural factors, potential ignition sources (electrical, appliance-related, etc.), and the status of safety measures within the home.
The community of Sanson, already described by Mayor Michael Ford as a “tight-knit town” that has suffered a “sore hit,” continues to lean on each other for support. The sheer scale of the community financial response demonstrates the nation’s solidarity with the grieving mother as she faces the monumental task of rebuilding her life amidst profound sorrow. The focus of the community now shifts to supporting her through the judicial process and the immense emotional recovery ahead.
