Northland Mourns a Pioneer: Entrepreneur Monty Knight Named as Alleged Murder Victim

KAITĀIA, NORTHLAND – The Far North community is reeling from the shocking death of one of its most prominent and beloved figures, Monty Knight. The well-known entrepreneur, wine-maker, and former local politician was identified in court documents as the victim of an alleged murder that occurred at a property near Kaitāia on Sunday.

Monty Knight, who turned 80 earlier this year, was a fixture of the Northland business and civic landscape, known for his relentless community commitment and his pioneering spirit, particularly in the region’s wine industry. The news of his violent death has sent a wave of disbelief and profound sadness through the tight-knit Far North community where he lived and worked for decades.

The Tragic Incident and Immediate Arrest

Police were called to a home on Okahu Road, west of Kaitāia, at approximately 12:35 PM on Sunday following reports of an assault. Despite the swift response of emergency services, Mr. Knight was found in a critical condition and could not be saved.

In a rapid development, Acting Detective Inspector Tania Jellyman, of the Northland CIB, confirmed that a 57-year-old Far North woman was arrested a short time later at a separate Far North address. Police have stated they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the death.

Court documents subsequently revealed that the woman is facing a charge of murder by stabbing/cutting and was due to appear in the Kaitāia District Court yesterday afternoon. A cordon remains in place at the Okahu Road property as police forensic teams conduct a meticulous scene examination. A post-mortem examination is scheduled in the coming days to determine the exact cause of death.

A Legacy of Entrepreneurship and Service

Monty Knight’s impact on Northland spanned several decades and industries, establishing him as one of the region’s most successful and colourful personalities.

His career began with early ventures in signwriting and music promotion before he opened his first retail outlet, Monty’s Disc Inn, on Kaitāia’s Commerce Street. This record shop eventually expanded into a major retail hub for electronics, appliances, and beds, culminating in the well-known 100% Monty Knight store, which he sold in 2012.

However, his most enduring and transformative legacy lies in the world of winemaking. In 1984, Knight established Okahu Estate, becoming a pioneer in the renaissance of winemaking in Northland. At a time when many were sceptical about producing fine wine in the Far North’s unique climate and soil, Knight’s audacious efforts proved the critics wrong. Okahu Estate went on to become Northland’s most awarded winery, winning numerous gold medals and trophies, including for their celebrated Kaz Shiraz 1994.

Beyond business, Knight was deeply invested in public service. He served as a Far North District Councillor and later as a Northland Regional Councillor, consistently campaigning for the promotion of commerce and tourism in the region. His contributions were formally recognised in 2010 when he was inducted into the Northland Business Hall of Fame.

Former Far North Mayor John Carter expressed the collective grief and shock of the community: “I knew him very well, as did most people in Kaitāia. He’s a very community-minded person who’s done a tremendous amount for the community. A very successful businessman of course, which has enabled him to do so. But he’s been very generous with his time and support.”

The sudden, violent nature of Mr. Knight’s passing stands in stark contrast to his vibrant public life. His personal life was also marked by his enduring passion for his Okahu Estate property, where he cultivated not only grapes but also exquisite palm and banana trees, earning him the nickname “the Captain Kirk of New Zealand winemaking” from Cuisine magazine in 2005.

As the police investigation continues, the Far North is left to reconcile the loss of a major community contributor under such tragic circumstances. The formal charges filed provide a chilling framework for a case that is expected to draw significant attention, given the victim’s high profile and the community’s deep connection to him.
