Upper Hutt, NZ – The landscape of grocery shopping in the Hutt Valley just became a little more competitive. Plenty Foods, a new, independent supermarket, threw open its doors in Brewtown on Thursday, offering locals a dedicated alternative to the dominant national supermarket duopoly.

The store’s owner, Wellington businessman Henry Hutcheon, is aiming to deliver cheaper and more affordable commodities to the community, building on the success of his existing Supersave store in Naenae.

🛠️ First-Day Database Drama

The opening was not without drama, as Hutcheon revealed a significant technical hurdle on the morning of the launch.

“Unfortunately, the database we had errored out first thing in the morning, so we had to basically rebuild our entire database of all the products we had on the shelves – which takes a lot of time,” Hutcheon told RNZ’s Nine to Noon.

Despite the frantic start, the opening proceeded, ushering in a new era of choice for Upper Hutt consumers.

🤝 Local Jobs and Community Focus

Plenty Foods has committed to a strong local focus, hiring 40 staff for the new store.

“We’ve hired most of our staff locally and we’ve got a lot of young people for the local workforce as well,” Hutcheon said. He also stressed the supermarket’s commitment to community groups and its mission to make prices affordable.

The store aims to be a full-service supermarket, stocking “everything,” including a full produce department, a fresh butchery, bakery, fish cabinet, and even a unique pie developed in collaboration with local favourite CJ’s Hangi. Upper Hutt Mayor Peri Zee praised this commitment, noting the store’s stock of other local producers like Dough Bakery and The Pickery flowers.

🥊 Challenging the Big Players

The arrival of Plenty Foods is a significant victory for consumers frustrated by the lack of competition in the national grocery sector, a topic that has drawn intense scrutiny from the Commerce Commission.

Hutcheon acknowledged the struggle to secure supply in the current market, confirming the challenges faced when dealing with the industry’s biggest suppliers.

“There’s been some suppliers that have been willing to work really hard with us, there have been some that have taken a little bit of convincing and then there are some that have just proven to be very difficult,” Hutcheon stated. “I guess the bigger they are, the harder they are to deal with us – some of them have been quite disappointing.”

Upper Hutt Mayor Peri Zee welcomed the new competition, emphasizing its importance for the community.

“Having independently owned supermarkets is really helpful for that competition, because clearly, we have a competition problem in the supermarket sector,” said Mayor Zee. “Having extra players come in is awesome and can be really helpful to reduce costs.”

Plenty Foods is located in Brewtown, a rapidly growing commercial and entertainment precinct, and is positioned to become a central hub for the local community seeking greater choice and better prices at the checkout.
