Colombo, Sri Lanka – August 19, 2025 – The bustling city of Colombo has officially launched an ambitious “Green Mobility Colombo” initiative aimed at transforming its transportation network into a more sustainable and environmentally friendly system. The multi-faceted plan includes the expansion of the electric bus fleet, the development of dedicated cycling lanes across the city, and the introduction of incentives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles by residents and businesses.

The Colombo Municipal Council, in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and several international organizations, has spearheaded the initiative in response to growing concerns about air pollution and traffic congestion in the capital city. The first phase of the project involves the deployment of fifty new electric buses to key routes, replacing older, diesel-powered vehicles. The goal is to have a fully electric public bus fleet within the next five years.

In parallel, the development of a comprehensive network of protected cycling lanes is underway. The initial phase will focus on connecting residential areas with commercial hubs and educational institutions, making cycling a safer and more convenient option for commuters. The city is also investing in bicycle sharing schemes to further promote cycling as a mode of transport.

To incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles, the government has introduced a range of measures, including tax breaks on the purchase of electric cars and motorcycles, as well as the installation of public charging infrastructure across Colombo. Additionally, preferential parking and reduced toll fees are being offered to electric vehicle owners.

“This is a significant step towards creating a healthier and more liveable city for all our residents,” stated Mayor of Colombo, Ms. Padma Silva, at the launch event. “The Green Mobility Colombo initiative reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainable transportation options. We believe this will lead to cleaner air, less traffic congestion, and a better quality of life for everyone.”

The initiative has been met with generally positive reactions from the public, although some concerns have been raised about the pace of implementation and the need for adequate infrastructure development to support the transition to green transportation. The Colombo Municipal Council has assured residents that regular progress updates will be provided and that feedback will be actively sought throughout the project.
