COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s formidable leg-spin all-rounder, Wanindu Hasaranga, has been officially ruled out of the upcoming two-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Zimbabwe. The 27-year-old’s absence from the squad is due to a persistent hamstring injury, a setback that has sidelined him since a tour of Bangladesh in July. This latest development is a significant blow to the Sri Lankan side, which had been hoping for his return as a key component of their bowling attack and a dynamic lower-order batsman.

The hamstring injury, sustained while batting in the final ODI against Bangladesh, has proven more severe than initially anticipated. Hasaranga had already missed the T20I leg of that same tour and has been undergoing rehabilitation at Sri Lanka Cricket’s High-Performance Centre. While the exact grade of his tear has not been disclosed, his continued unavailability for a crucial series underscores the seriousness of the issue and raises concerns about his readiness for the T20 Asia Cup and other future assignments.

Hasaranga’s absence creates a substantial void in the team’s balance. As a world-class leg-spinner and a potent lower-order hitter, he has a proven track record of changing the course of a game with both bat and ball. His bowling in particular has been instrumental in recent victories, and the team will need to rely on its depth to compensate. The spin attack for the series will now be spearheaded by the likes of Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay, with support from all-rounders Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis.

In addition to the loss of Hasaranga, the selectors have made several other changes to the squad for the tour. Young top-order batter Pavan Rathnayake has received his maiden call-up, a reward for his impressive domestic performances. Nuwanidu Fernando and Sadeera Samarawickrama have also been recalled, providing the team with new batting options. The pace department will be led by the trio of Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, and Asitha Fernando.

The two-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, set to begin on August 29 in Harare, is an important part of Sri Lanka’s preparation for the Men’s T20 Asia Cup. While the tour presents an opportunity for emerging players to prove their worth on the international stage, the team will undoubtedly feel the absence of its star all-rounder. All eyes will now be on Hasaranga’s recovery process, as his fitness will be paramount for Sri Lanka’s chances in the upcoming tournaments. The team and its fans will be hoping for a swift and full recovery.
