Sri Lanka has slipped to 93rd place in the latest Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, according to a report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This represents a decline compared to previous years, signaling challenges in the country’s innovation ecosystem.

Experts say the drop highlights weaknesses in research and development, technology adoption, and the broader innovation infrastructure. Despite improvements in education and digital adoption in recent years, Sri Lanka faces rising competition from other emerging economies that are investing heavily in technology and innovation.

Analysts warn that maintaining competitiveness on the global stage will require strategic investment in research, stronger public-private partnerships, and policies that foster entrepreneurship and innovation-driven growth.

The decline in the GII ranking raises concerns among policymakers and business leaders about the country’s ability to attract investment and maintain sustainable economic growth in an increasingly technology-driven world.
