COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (Sunday, February 1, 2026) — India has further strengthened its role as Sri Lanka’s “first responder” by shipping a consignment of 10 additional Bailey bridges to assist in the reconstruction of infrastructure destroyed by the devastating Cyclone Ditwah.
The bridges were dispatched from Visakhapatnam on Saturday aboard the Indian Navy ship INS Gharial. This move follows the successful installation of several other bridges by Indian Army engineers in the Jaffna, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya regions over the past month.
🚢 Restoring Critical Connectivity
Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the island late last year, caused catastrophic landslides and flooding, washing away dozens of permanent bridges and cutting off vital supply routes.
- The Consignment: These 10 prefabricated, portable Bailey bridges are designed for rapid assembly to reconnect isolated communities.
- The Mission: The bridges are part of Operation Sagar Bandhu, India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mission in Sri Lanka.
- Strategic Aid: Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, confirmed the shipment on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “India continues to stand with Sri Lanka to support reconstruction efforts.”
💰 Part of the $450 Million “Special Package”
This hardware delivery is a key component of the USD 450 million Special Economic Package announced by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar during his visit to Colombo in December 2025.
Breakdown of the $450 Million Package:
- $350 Million Concessional Credit: Targeted at large-scale reconstruction of roads, railways, and bridges.
- $100 Million Grants: Focused on immediate relief, including housing, health, and education infrastructure.
Note on “Billions”: While some early social media reports mentioned “$450 billion,” official government records from both nations confirm the package is USD 450 million.
