AHANGAMA, SRI LANKA (Friday, January 23, 2026) — In a swift move to enforce road safety and legal compliance among visitors, the Ahangama Police have initiated legal action against nine foreign nationals caught riding motorcycles without valid driving licenses.

The group, who arrived in Sri Lanka on tourist visas, was intercepted during a special traffic operation conducted directly in front of the Ahangama Police Station on Thursday (Jan 22).

👮 The Operation & Legal Action

The crackdown comes amid rising concerns over road safety in popular coastal tourist hubs. Despite being visitors, the law requires all motorists to possess a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) or a temporary Sri Lankan driving license.

  • The Inspection: Police officers conducted a series of spot checks on Thursday, identifying nine foreigners who failed to produce any legal documentation authorizing them to operate motor vehicles in Sri Lanka.
  • Court Appearance: Following the seizure of the motorcycles, the suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court today, Friday (Jan 23), for further legal proceedings.
  • A Growing Concern: This is not an isolated incident; the Sri Lankan government has previously raised concerns about tourists operating vehicles illegally, which often leads to accidents and liability issues.
