Sri Lanka Disaster Death Toll Climbs to 607 Across the Country; Hundreds Missing
COLOMBO — The catastrophic weather conditions gripping Sri Lanka have resulted in a rapidly rising death toll, with the number of fatalities reaching 607, according to the latest figures released by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
A fresh update issued at 6:00 PM today (December 5, 2025) confirms the severity of the disaster, which has affected all 25 districts of the island. The number of people reported missing due to the calamities has also increased to 214.
The disastrous weather has affected a staggering total of 2,082,195 individuals, belonging to 586,464 families.
📉 Regional Breakdown of Fatalities and Missing Persons
According to the DMC report, the central hill country remains the hardest hit region, with the highest number of casualties concentrated in a few districts:

The Kandy District has reported the maximum number of deaths, accounting for 232 fatalities and 81 missing persons. Significant numbers of missing individuals were also reported from Kegalle (41), Nuwara Eliya (35), and Badulla (28).
🏠 Thousands Remain in Safety Centers
The humanitarian situation is critical, with tens of thousands of people displaced from their homes. The DMC notice also indicates that 152,537 individuals, from 43,715 families, are currently sheltered in various safety centres established across the country.
Relief and rescue operations, led by military and disaster response teams, are continuing across the island, with search efforts focused particularly on the regions with the highest number of missing persons.
