QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND (January 12, 2026) — The Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has announced the immediate and total closure of the historic Skippers Bridge. Effective today, all vehicle, cycle, and pedestrian access has been banned until further notice after inspectors discovered critical failures in the bridge’s suspension cables.

As New Zealand’s highest suspension bridge, the 125-year-old structure is a vital link for residents, tourism operators, and recreational users heading into Skippers Valley.

⚠️ Critical Structural Failure

The decision to close the bridge follows a recent engineering investigation that uncovered alarming deterioration in the core support system.

  • Cable Damage: “Investigations found failures of the wires in the cables used to suspend Skippers Bridge,” said Roger Davidson, the council’s acting General Manager of Property and Infrastructure.
  • Integrity Concerns: Due to the broken wires, engineers are currently unable to determine the bridge’s load-bearing capacity or its overall structural integrity, making any crossing an extreme risk.
  • Public Warning: Davidson urged the public to respect the barriers and signage. “Public safety is of the utmost importance,” he emphasized.

🏛️ A Historic Landmark in Limbo

Opened in 1901, Skippers Bridge is not only a functional piece of infrastructure but a significant piece of New Zealand’s heritage, providing access to the Mount Aurum Recreation Reserve.

  • Economic Impact: The closure is expected to hit local tour companies and adventure tourism operators particularly hard, as Skippers Valley is a popular destination for scenic tours and rafting.
  • Future Decisions: The council noted that the long-term future and potential repair of the bridge will be debated by elected members during the upcoming annual planning process.

📍 Travel Advisory

Travelers and residents are advised that there is currently no alternative route to cross the canyon at this location. All planned trips to the Mount Aurum Recreation Reserve via Skippers Bridge should be postponed or rerouted if possible.
