HENDERSON, AUCKLAND – Two women are facing a grim Christmas after being caught with a vehicle boot full of stolen high-end groceries in West Auckland. The pair, aged 36 and 59, allegedly attempted to make off with nearly $1,000 worth of premium items from a Henderson supermarket on Sunday afternoon, December 21, 2025.

What was intended to be a “luxury haul” ended in a swift arrest by the Henderson Beat Team, who have now notched their 116th arrest since launching in September.

🥩 The “Nice” List vs. The “Naughty” List

According to Sergeant Rachel England, the women attempted a sophisticated ruse to bypass security. They entered the store and selected a massive amount of groceries, but only paid for a fraction of them.

  • The Receipt: The women presented a receipt for $160 worth of goods.
  • The Reality: Upon inspecting their vehicle parked a short distance away, police uncovered a stash of unpaid groceries worth just shy of $1,000.

The “luxury” nature of the items stood out to investigators. The stolen goods reportedly included:

  • Premium Meats and Cheeses: High-value cuts and gourmet selections.
  • Luxury Cat Food: Specific high-end brands intended for a pampered pet.
  • General Groceries: A large quantity of everyday items hidden beneath the luxury goods.

“They had allegedly tried to steal just shy of $1,000 in groceries… Our team arrested the pair a short distance from the store after supermarket workers alerted us to the offending,” Sergeant England said.

⚖️ Christmas Eve in Court

The two women have been officially charged with shoplifting (theft of goods valued between $500–$1,000). Under New Zealand law, this charge carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in prison.

While most Kiwis will be preparing for festive dinners with family, these two defendants are scheduled to appear in the Waitākere District Court on Wednesday, December 24—Christmas Eve.

Sergeant England noted that the quick arrest was a result of the strong relationships built between the new “Beat Team” and local businesses at The Boundary and WestCity shopping centers.
