AUCKLAND, NZ – Aucklanders are being warned to prepare for a significant disruption to their afternoon and evening commute as a band of rain moves over the region, bringing with it periods of heavy downpours and strong winds.

The latest forecasts indicate that while the morning saw partly cloudy conditions with isolated showers, the weather is set to deteriorate sharply from the late afternoon onwards. .

🌧️ Heavy Rain Expected During Peak Commute

Meteorological services advise that rain is expected to develop in the region from the late afternoon on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. The crucial period for commuters is anticipated to be between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM, during which the heaviest of the “chunky” showers are forecast.

The rain is described as being briefly heavy before easing later in the night. Drivers should anticipate quickly deteriorating visibility and hazardous road conditions. There is a heightened risk of surface flooding in low-lying areas, which could further impact public transport and road networks.

  • Commute Forecast (4:00 PM – 7:00 PM): Heaviest rain, reduced visibility, and risk of surface flooding.
  • Total Rainfall: While no official severe warnings are in place, the intensity of the downpours during this short period is enough to cause significant disruption.

💨 Wind Change and Strong Northerlies

In addition to the rain, the region is also experiencing strong winds, which will shift during the afternoon. Northerly winds, described as strong at times, have been a feature of the day. These are forecast to change to a southwesterly direction early this evening. Strong winds pose a risk, particularly to high-sided vehicles and motorcycles traveling across exposed structures like the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

🚦 Travel Advice: Plan for Delays

Auckland Transport and emergency services are urging the public to exercise caution during the afternoon commute:

  • Drive to the Conditions: Increase following distances and slow down, especially on motorways.
  • Public Transport: Check for real-time updates on bus, train, and ferry services, as heavy rain can cause delays and cancellations.
  • Non-Essential Travel: If possible, consider delaying non-essential travel until after the heaviest rain clears, which is expected late tonight.

Looking ahead, the weather is forecast to ease slightly overnight, with a mainly fine day expected on Wednesday, though there remains a chance of a shower until the evening. Southwesterly winds will become strong in the morning on Wednesday.

Aucklanders should keep umbrellas and rain gear handy and monitor the latest forecasts as they head home this evening.
