Police have formally released the name of the teenager who tragically died following a single-vehicle 4WD crash on Tokerau Beach in the Far North last week.
The victim has been identified as Samuel James Herdman, 17, of Pukenui.
The incident occurred on Friday evening, November 14, when emergency services were called to the scene on the Karikari Peninsula around 7:30pm after a four-wheel-drive vehicle rolled.
“Sadly, Samuel James Herdman, 17, of Pukenui, died at the scene,” a Police spokesperson confirmed in a statement.
The fatal crash, which is understood to have involved three occupants in total, sent two other people to hospital via helicopter. One occupant was airlifted in critical condition, while the other was treated for moderate injuries.
The local community has been deeply affected by the loss of the young man, prompting an outpouring of grief for the family and friends of the Pukenui resident.
Police have confirmed that inquiries into the circumstances of the single-vehicle crash are continuing as part of a formal investigation to determine the exact factors that led to the vehicle rolling on the beach.
