A horrific morning commute turned into a major emergency on Canterbury’s State Highway 73 today, after a collision between a ute and a milk tanker resulted in a fiery crash and left one person fighting for their life.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene on the main West Coast Road, near Kirwee, around 8:00 am following reports of the severe accident. Upon arrival, crews from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) faced a daunting situation: the cab of the milk tanker was engulfed in flames, and the driver of the ute was critically injured and trapped inside the crushed vehicle.

FENZ crews worked quickly to extinguish the blaze while simultaneously conducting a challenging extrication of the trapped ute driver. Once freed, the critically injured person was immediately transported by a St John helicopter to Christchurch Hospital.

Fonterra, whose contractor was driving the milk tanker, confirmed their driver was not seriously injured but was deeply shaken by the incident and is receiving support. The scale of the collision was such that the Police Serious Crash Unit was called to the site to begin an extensive investigation into the cause.

SH73 was closed for several hours between Kirwee and Creyke Road, with authorities urging motorists to expect significant delays and use detours. The road has since reopened with a temporary 50km/h speed restriction in place. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by commuters and heavy vehicle operators on high-volume regional highways. The immediate focus remains on the condition of the critically injured ute driver.
