The New Zealand Government has announced an urgent financial contribution of NZ$1 million to support emergency humanitarian relief in Sri Lanka, as the island nation grapples with the catastrophic aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Ditwah.

The commitment follows a surge of devastating floods and deadly landslides triggered by the cyclone, which has severely impacted over half a million people across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka.

New Zealand extends its heartfelt condolences to all those impacted by the disaster.

Ditwah Leaves Trail of Devastation

Cyclone Ditwah, which made landfall in late November, unleashed torrential rain that led to what officials are calling the worst flooding in Sri Lanka in two decades. Search and rescue operations are racing against time, with reports indicating the death toll has tragically climbed past 300, and hundreds more are still missing.

The severe weather has caused widespread destruction, displacing over 100,000 people who are currently seeking refuge in temporary shelters. Crucial infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and power lines, has been destroyed or severely damaged, particularly in the central hill country—a vital region for the country’s tea industry. The scale of the destruction has prompted Sri Lankan authorities to declare a state of emergency.

The disaster hits the nation while it is still navigating significant economic difficulties, compounding the challenge of immediate relief and long-term recovery.

Aotearoa Stands in Solidarity

The financial contribution of NZ$1 million is earmarked for the provision of essential emergency humanitarian relief, including temporary shelter, food, clean drinking water, and sanitation supplies. The aid will be delivered through a trusted international humanitarian response partner, ensuring resources quickly reach the most vulnerable communities cut off by floodwaters and landslides.

In announcing the support, a government spokesperson emphasised the deep connection between the two nations: “Our thoughts are with those affected in this difficult time. New Zealand continues to stand with the Sri Lankan people as they face this immense challenge. This contribution is a demonstration of the commitment of Aotearoa to assist our friends in the Asia-Pacific region when they need it most.”

This emergency aid package reinforces New Zealand’s history of supporting disaster relief and recovery efforts globally, reflecting the nation’s broader commitment to international partnership and compassion. The Government is continuing to monitor the situation and remains in close contact with international partners and the Sri Lankan government regarding further needs as the complex recovery operation gets underway.
