COLOMBO / MELBOURNE — In a major boost for tourism and the large Sri Lankan diaspora in Australia, low-cost carrier Jetstar has announced the launch of the only direct low-cost service connecting Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Colombo, Sri Lanka. This new route is set to begin in late 2026 and promises to open up affordable, non-stop travel to the South Asian nation.

The announcement comes as part of one of the most significant expansion phases in Jetstar’s history, targeting traditionally underserved long-haul markets.

The New Service Details

The new flight service, operating under the Jetstar Airways brand (JQ), will commence on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, marking the first time an Australian airline has operated this route in decades.

Fare Offer and Service Permanence

One of the most appealing details for travellers is the service structure and the highly competitive launch pricing.

Permanence: Year-Round Service

Jetstar has confirmed this will be a year-round service, not a seasonal route, providing consistency and reliability for both leisure travellers and those visiting friends and relatives (VFR). The commitment to a year-round schedule is a strong indicator of the airline’s long-term confidence in the demand for direct, low-cost travel between the two countries.

Launch Fare Offer

To mark the introduction of the new route, Jetstar launched a 24-hour Route Launch Sale with incredible introductory one-way fares:

  • Starting Price: Fares were available from just AUD $315 one-way from Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Colombo.
  • Conditions: These promotional fares were available at jetstar.com but were subject to availability and did not include checked baggage, adhering to the low-cost carrier model. The sale was a limited-time offer, designed to drive initial bookings.

Upgraded Fleet for Long-Haul Comfort

The route will be serviced by Jetstar’s fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are undergoing a progressive overhaul beginning in early 2026. This upgrade program will bring enhanced comfort and capacity to the long-haul flights:

  • The refit includes more than doubling the number of Business Class seats.
  • Wi-Fi installation will allow customers to stream entertainment to their own devices.
  • A new lie-flat crew rest area is being added, enabling the aircraft to operate even longer routes, up to 16 hours, further expanding Jetstar’s potential long-haul network.

The first of the upgraded 787 aircraft is scheduled to arrive in Melbourne in late March 2026, ahead of the Colombo launch.

Boosting Ties Between Australia and Sri Lanka

Jetstar CEO, Stephanie Tully, emphasized that the new route will provide an affordable and direct option for Australians to explore Sri Lanka and is expected to be highly popular with the sizable Sri Lankan community residing in Melbourne and Victoria.

The Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer welcomed the addition, noting that Sri Lanka is one of the region’s fastest-growing destinations and that the flights will make it easier for Victorians to explore the region or visit family. The direct service eliminates the current need for passengers to transit through hubs like Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, significantly shortening overall travel time and making the journey more convenient for budget-conscious travellers.
