ABU DHABI – Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage experienced a bittersweet victory as he was informed of his father’s sudden death only after the conclusion of Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup clash against Afghanistan on Thursday, September 18.

Wellalage, 22, had a difficult day on the field, conceding 49 runs in his four overs. His final over was particularly expensive, as veteran Afghan batter Mohammad Nabi smashed five sixes and 32 runs off his bowling. This late onslaught helped Afghanistan reach a competitive total of 169.

Mohammad Nabi smashed five sixes and 32 runs off his bowling.

However, Sri Lanka’s chase was successful, anchored by Kusal Mendis’s unbeaten 74, securing a six-wicket win and a spot in the Super Four stage.

The tragic news of his father, Suranga Wellalage’s, passing due to a heart attack was reportedly conveyed to Dunith by the team manager and coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, after the match formalities were complete. Wellalage, who was unaware of the tragedy while playing, has since left the team to return home.

The team’s celebration of their victory was reportedly muted as they came to terms with the devastating news. The incident has cast doubt on Wellalage’s participation in the rest of the tournament.

The information available does not provide a direct relationship between the death of Dunith Wellalage’s father and his performance in the last over. Wellalage was not aware of his father’s passing while he was on the field.
