Wellington’s world-renowned visual effects powerhouse, Wētā FX, has officially secured an Academy Award nomination for its groundbreaking work on James Cameron’s latest masterpiece, Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The nomination marks a significant milestone for the studio, which was responsible for a staggering 94% of the film’s visual effects, completing more than 3,100 complex shots.

🏆 Hollywood’s Highest Honour

The nomination for Best Visual Effects sees Wētā FX veterans return to the global spotlight. The team is led by:

In a joint statement, the trio shared their gratitude: “This recognition belongs to every artist, technician, and collaborator who contributed to the film—from the live-action crew to everyone at Wētā FX. It is a privilege to represent the wider New Zealand film community on the world stage.”
