WEATHER ALERT: Severe Thunderstorms Lash Bay of Plenty; Tornado Spotted in Waikato
By Lions Roar News Weather Desk
WHAKATĀNE, NEW ZEALAND (Friday, January 16, 2026) — New Zealand’s summer has taken a violent turn as a line of severe thunderstorms sweeps across the North Island this morning. Following a night of “wild weather” that saw a small tornado touch down in the Waikato, MetService has issued urgent warnings for the Bay of Plenty, while Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay remain under high alert.
The sudden shift comes as a shock to many after the sweltering heat and clear skies enjoyed by the country just last weekend.
⚡ Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Ōpōtiki & Whakatāne
As of 7:45 AM, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for the Ōpōtiki and Whakatāne districts. Meteorologists tracking the system report a concentrated line of storms moving rapidly towards the southeast.
- Expected Impact Areas:
- 8:15 AM: Ruatoki North, Waimana, and Kutarere.
- 8:45 AM: Matahi and the Waioeka Gorge.
- Primary Hazards: Very heavy rain capable of causing flash flooding in streams, gullies, and urban areas. Motorists are warned that driving conditions will be extremely hazardous with near-zero visibility during downpours.
🌪️ Waikato Tornado & Overnight Chaos
The warning follows a night of atmospheric instability. Footage emerged yesterday from Maihiihi in the Waikato, showing a small tornado spinning beneath dark, rotating clouds over farmland. While the severe warning for the Waikato has since been lifted, the footage serves as a stark reminder of the storm’s intensity.
🌧️ Regional Watches: Gisborne & Hawke’s Bay
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in place for Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay until 11:00 AM today. Residents in these areas should prepare for sudden heavy rain and frequent lightning.
🛡️ Safety Advice from NEMA
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has advised residents in the path of the storms to:
- Take Shelter: Move indoors immediately as the storm approaches.
- Secure Property: Tie down or move inside any loose outdoor objects (trampolines, garden furniture) that could become projectiles.
- Stay Clear: Beware of fallen trees and downed power lines, which may be live.
