COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (January 9, 2026) — In a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s search and rescue capabilities, the United States has announced the donation of 10 helicopters to the island nation. The aircraft are intended to enhance the country’s readiness for natural disasters and emergency humanitarian missions.

U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, confirmed the decision via a post on her official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account, highlighting the move as a strengthening of bilateral ties and disaster resilience.

🚁 Strengthening Search and Rescue (SAR)

The donation comes at a critical time as the region faces increasingly volatile weather patterns. Ambassador Chung noted that these helicopters will be vital for operations during events like Cyclone ‘Ditva’, which recently underscored the need for rapid aerial response.

  • Operational Use: The helicopters will be specifically utilized for:
    • Search and Rescue (SAR): Finding and extracting individuals stranded during floods or landslides.
    • Disaster Relief: Transporting essential supplies to cut-off regions.
    • Medical Evacuations: Rapid transport of injured persons from disaster zones.
  • Timeline: The aircraft are scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka during the first half of 2026.
  • Recipient: The fleet will be officially handed over to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) for maintenance and operation.

🤝 A Partnership for Resilience

Ambassador Chung’s announcement emphasizes the United States’ commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s safety infrastructure. By equipping the Sri Lanka Air Force with modern assets, the U.S. aims to ensure that local authorities can respond to domestic crises without total reliance on delayed international aid.

“These helicopters will provide the mobility needed to save lives when every second counts,” the Ambassador’s post indicated.
