‘Unprovoked’ Group Attack on Auckland Bus Leaves Passenger Injured

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (Friday, January 16, 2026) — Police have launched an investigation into a disturbing and unprovoked assault on a public bus in Onehunga yesterday afternoon. A passenger traveling alone was targeted by a group of offenders, resulting in injuries that required medical attention.

The incident occurred during broad daylight, sparking fresh concerns regarding safety on Auckland’s public transport network.

According to Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greaves, Auckland East Area Investigations Manager, the attack took place on Thursday, January 15, on a bus traveling through the Onehunga area.

  • Timeframe: The assault occurred between 1:15 PM and 3:40 PM.
  • The Victim: A person traveling solo was confronted by the group without provocation.
  • Injuries: The victim sustained moderate injuries and was forced to seek medical treatment.

The matter was formally reported to the police later that evening, and authorities are now working to identify the individuals involved.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greaves condemned the attack, describing it as “unprovoked.” Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the bus and surrounding transit hubs to track the movements of the alleged offenders.

“This was a traumatic event for the victim who was simply trying to go about their day using public transport,” police stated.
