Tragedy in Haldummulla: Private Bus Driver Killed After Attempting to Close Swinging Door

HALDUMMULLA, SRI LANKA (Sunday, January 18, 2026) — A routine journey from Colombo to Welimada ended in tragedy this morning (January 18) when a private bus overturned in the Uwathenna area of Haldummulla. The accident claimed the life of the bus driver and left two passengers hospitalized.

According to Haldummulla Police, the incident was caused by a freak mechanical failure that led to a fatal loss of control.


⚠️ A Fatal Attempt to Secure the Vehicle

Preliminary investigations suggest the accident occurred due to a malfunction with the driver’s side door.

  • The Incident: While the bus was in motion, the door next to the driver’s seat suddenly swung open.
  • The Struggle: In a split-second reaction, the driver reportedly reached out to pull the door shut while still operating the vehicle.
  • The Crash: During this struggle, the driver lost steering control. The bus careened off the road, struck a nearby embankment, and flipped onto its side in the middle of the highway.

Haldummulla Police confirmed that the driver died instantly due to the impact of the roll-over.
