TAURANGA, NEW ZEALAND (Tuesday, January 27, 2026) — Tauranga Mayor Mahé Drysdale is set to address the latest developments regarding the devastating landslide at Mauao (Mount Maunganui), as the government moves to take a lead role in investigating the tragedy that has left six people presumed dead.

The announcement comes following the government’s first post-Cabinet press conference of the year, where Prime Minister Christopher Luxon signaled a shift away from a council-led investigation in favor of a fully independent government inquiry.

🏛️ A “Strong Case” for Central Government Inquiry

Prime Minister Luxon emphasized that the families of those caught in the Mt Maunganui holiday park slip last Thursday deserve a dispassionate and objective account of what occurred.

  • Potential Conflict: Luxon noted a “potentially inherent conflict” between the Tauranga City Council and the council-owned campground.
  • Focus on Facts: “There are many questions being asked, including whether there was a missed opportunity to evacuate people sooner,” Luxon stated.
  • New Ministerial Role: Auckland MP Chris Penk has been appointed Associate Emergency Management Minister specifically to oversee the advice on the scope of this inquiry.

💰 Immediate Financial Relief Announced

While the search and recovery efforts continue, the government has unlocked immediate funding to assist the region’s recovery:

  1. $1.2 Million Mayoral Relief: Immediate support for affected regions to be distributed through mayoral relief funds, supplementing annual contributions.
  2. $1 Million for Marae: Dedicated funding to reimburse and support marae that have been at the frontline of welfare support. Luxon described the efforts of local Iwi as “exceptional,” providing food, shelter, and care to the displaced.
  3. Temporary Accommodation: The government has activated its temporary accommodation service to help the approximately 500 people currently displaced from their homes across the North Island.
