Taupō High School Inferno: N Block Destroyed in Massive Sunday Blaze

TAUPŌ, NEW ZEALAND — Sunday, February 8, 2026 — A massive fire has gutted a significant portion of Taupō-nui-a-Tia College this afternoon, sending enormous plumes of black smoke across Lake Taupō and triggering a multi-regional emergency response.
Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) was alerted to the “well-involved” blaze at the Spa Road campus at approximately 2:10 PM. Witnesses described hearing “popping sounds” as flames engulfed the two-story N Block, located near the front of the school grounds.

Due to the scale of the inferno, firefighting crews were dispatched from across the central and western North Island.
