By Lions Roar News Diplomatic Desk
COLOMBO, SRI LANKA — The Sri Lankan government has officially voiced its strong opposition to the recent United States military intervention in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture and removal of President Nicolás Maduro.
Speaking at a special press conference held at the Department of Government Information on the afternoon of January 4, 2026, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath outlined the nation’s firm stance on the escalating crisis.
⚖️ Respect for International Law and the UN Charter
Minister Herath emphasized that the actions taken by the United States appear to be in direct contradiction to the fundamental principles laid out by the United Nations.
“Action must be taken against activities that violate the basic charters of the United Nations,” the Minister stated. He argued that the sovereignty and independence of any nation must be protected and respected under international law, regardless of political differences.
The Minister’s remarks highlighted a growing concern among non-aligned nations that the unilateral military action sets a dangerous precedent for global diplomacy.
🏛️ A Call for Sovereign Independence
During the briefing, Herath clarified that Sri Lanka’s position is rooted in the belief that every nation has the right to self-determination without external military interference.
“It is mandatory that actions are carried out in a manner that protects the independence of a country, in accordance with the UN Charter and international legal frameworks,” Herath added.
This statement positions Sri Lanka alongside several other nations that have expressed alarm over the “arrest” of a sitting head of state on foreign soil, urging the international community to return to a rules-based order rather than the use of force.
