Society of Mary Knew of Allegations Against Convicted Priest 20 Years Ago
By Lions Roar Aotearoa Investigative Desk
CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND (Wednesday, January 28, 2026) — An explosive RNZ investigation has revealed that the Society of Mary was made aware of sexual abuse allegations against Friar Rowan Donoghue nearly two decades before his recent conviction, yet he was placed on a “safety plan” rather than being reported to the police by the organization.
Donoghue recently pleaded guilty to six charges of sexual abuse involving four boys who were boarders at St Bede’s College between 1996 and 2000. The charges include indecent assault and sexual violation.
⚠️ The 2007 Anonymous Complaint
The Society of Mary confirmed to RNZ that they received an anonymous complaint of a sexual nature against Donoghue in 2007.
- The Response: The religious group claims they tried to investigate but could not verify the details because the complaint was anonymous.
- The “Safety Plan”: Despite being unable to “verify” the claims, the Society determined Donoghue should be removed from public ministry and placed under a “safety plan” that has remained in effect until his recent arrest.
- Police Notification: The Society admits they did not contact the police themselves in 2007, stating instead that the anonymous whistleblower was “encouraged to contact the police.”

🏫 Schools Respond to Revelations
The fallout has sent shockwaves through the prestigious Catholic schools where Donoghue worked.
- St Bede’s College: Rector Jon McDowall stated the school was “formally notified” by police in 2023 and has worked openly with them. He emphasized that the school’s focus is on providing a safe environment for current and past students.
- St Patrick’s Silverstream: Rector Rob Ferreira confirmed the school had not been made aware of any abuse allegations during Donoghue’s ten-year tenure there (1982–1992) and had not received any police inquiries.
🙏 An Apology to Survivors
A spokesperson for the Society of Mary expressed “deep regret” for the harm caused.
“Our first thoughts are with those who came forward and described what happened to them. We extend our apologies to them and will seek to do so personally at an appropriate time.”
The Society maintains they were unaware of the specific allegations Donoghue pleaded guilty to until police laid charges last year.
