GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND (January 7, 2026) — The dream of a better life in the “Lucky Country” is turning into a nightmare for a growing number of New Zealanders. As Queensland’s housing crisis reaches a breaking point, a Gold Coast charity has revealed it is sending more homeless Kiwis back to Aotearoa than ever before.

The Nerang Neighbourhood Centre, which specializes in assisting New Zealanders across Australia, is using Queensland state funding to provide all-expenses-paid flights home for those who have run out of options.

🏚️ From Caravan Parks to Vans: The Reality of the Crisis

For many, the transition from employment to homelessness happens with terrifying speed. Dave Porter, a New Zealander who has called Australia home for 16 years, is one of those currently living in his van.

  • The Downward Spiral: Porter was working until five months ago when an injury left him unable to earn.
  • Housing Displacement: He was forced out of his caravan park after the property was sold.
  • Market Pressures: The Real Estate Institute of Queensland reports that the “Sunshine State” now has the lowest rate of home ownership in Australia, with rental prices skyrocketing beyond the reach of average earners.

✈️ Repatriation: The Last Resort

The Nerang Neighbourhood Centre has been offering repatriation flights for a decade, but General Manager Vicky Rose says the demand is reaching unprecedented levels.

  • Frequency: The center is now discussing repatriation with families several times a week and sending an average of two people back to New Zealand every month.
  • Funding: The flights are funded through emergency relief grants provided by the Australian government.
  • The “Only Option”: “Increasingly with our New Zealand cohort, the only option is going back to New Zealand, more often than not,” Rose stated.

⚠️ A Warning to Those “Jumping the Ditch”

Despite the struggles in Australia, some Kiwis remain hesitant to return. Porter expressed concerns that the cost of living in New Zealand is “way too expensive,” a sentiment echoed by many who fear they will be no better off back home.

However, the sheer volume of Kiwis arriving in Australia is alarming officials. According to Stats NZ, a record 72,000 New Zealanders left in the year to September 2025, with the vast majority heading for Australia.

“It scares me,” said Vicky Rose. “The amount of numbers that are coming out of New Zealand at the moment… I just hope they’ve done their research.”
