NZ Post to Ax 142 Service Counters in Nationwide Retail Shake-up
By Lions Roar Aotearoa Business Desk
WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND (Tuesday, January 27, 2026) — NZ Post has announced it will shut down 142 service counters located in pharmacies, libraries, and convenience stores across the country. The move follows a significant update to the government’s “Deed of Understanding,” which has governed postal requirements since the 1980s.
While 567 outlets will remain, the state-owned enterprise is pivoting away from traditional letter services toward high-tech “parcel hubs” to meet modern consumer demands.
📦 A Shift from Letters to Parcels
Sarah Sandoval, NZ Post General Manager of Consumer, stated that the retail network needed to be “rebalanced” for the 21st century.
- Parcel Hubs: New retail hubs designed specifically for sending, collecting, and returning parcels are already open in Newmarket and Hardinge Street (Auckland).
- Expansion Plans: More hubs are slated for Christchurch and Palmerston North later this year.
- Proximity Guarantee: NZ Post claims that 90% of urban New Zealanders will still live within four kilometres of a post shop. Rural services are reportedly unaffected by this round of closures.
⚠️ Union Warning: “Running Down Access”
The Postal Workers Union has slammed the decision, arguing that a 4km distance is not practical for many, especially the elderly.
Union Organiser John Maynard raised several concerns:
- Mobility Issues: For elderly residents in rest homes, a 4km trip to a city hub—where parking is often difficult—is not a viable replacement for a local walk-in counter.
- Economic Impact: Small businesses hosting these counters (franchisees) will lose significant foot traffic, potentially leading to job losses and business closures.
- Service Erosion: This move follows the recent removal of hundreds of roadside post boxes, which Maynard describes as a systematic “running down” of public services.
