COPENHAGEN, DENMARK (January 6, 2026) — In a stunning escalation of transatlantic tensions, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that any attempt by the United States to forcibly take control of Greenland would signal the “end of NATO.”

The Prime Minister’s comments come in the wake of a renewed push by US President Donald Trump for jurisdiction over the strategic Arctic island, coupled with a cryptic “20-day timeline” that has sent shockwaves through European capitals.

⚠️ The “20-Day” Warning and Military Fears

The diplomatic crisis ignited following a weekend of high-stakes military action. Following a US operation in Venezuela to capture Nicolás Maduro, President Trump turned his sights back to the Arctic.

  • The Quote: When asked about Greenland on Sunday, Trump told reporters, “Let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days,” sparking fears of an imminent intervention.
  • The Danish Response: “If the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops,” PM Frederiksen told TV2. She emphasized that such an act would dismantle the collective security framework that has existed since WWII.
  • “One More Dog Sled”: Trump mocked Denmark’s defense of the territory, claiming they had only added “one more dog sled” to their arsenal while Russian and Chinese ships allegedly swarm the region.

🇬🇱 Greenland Stands Firm: “We Are Not Venezuela”

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens Frederik Nielsen, held a defiant press conference in Nuuk on Monday, urging calm while rejecting the idea that the US could “simply conquer” the island.

“The situation is not such that the United States can simply conquer Greenland… we are insisting that we want good cooperation, but we will not accept being threatened.” — Jens Frederik Nielsen, PM of Greenland

Despite the brave face, the “SOON” social media post by former Trump official Katie Miller—showing Greenland draped in the Stars and Stripes—has left Greenlanders feeling vulnerable and “threatened.”

🌍 A Geopolitical Powderkeg

Greenland is a semiautonomous territory of the Danish Kingdom and a vital part of the NATO alliance. It houses the critical Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in the northwest.

While President Trump cites “national security” and mineral wealth as reasons for the takeover, experts are skeptical of his claims regarding Russian and Chinese proximity. Ulrik Pram Gad of the Danish Institute for International Studies noted that while foreign ships are in the Arctic, they are “too far away to see from Greenland with or without binoculars.”
