Lieutenant Chamitha’s military career was marked by a relentless pursuit of elite standards. An alumnus of Bandaranaike College, Gampaha, he joined the Sri Lanka Navy on June 30, 2017, as part of the 60th intake of officer cadets.
- Special Boat Squadron (SBS): After completing his initial naval training, he joined the elite SBS—the Sri Lankan Navy’s equivalent to the SEALs—where he excelled in specialized maritime warfare.
- Global Selection: In January 2025, he was selected for the ultra-competitive US Navy Naval Special Warfare Basic Training Command to undergo SEAL training.

The US Navy SEAL training is widely considered the toughest special forces program in the world. It involves multi-phase qualifications including Basic Underwater Demolition, advanced combat diving, land warfare, and small-unit tactics.
