AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (Wednesday, January 21, 2026 – 10:25 AM) — A major search and rescue operation is currently unfolding in northern Auckland after a person and their vehicle were swept away by rising floodwaters this morning.

The incident occurred as the region remains under a Red Heavy Rain Warning, with river levels surging to dangerous heights.

🚨 The Incident: A Fateful Crossing

Emergency services were alerted early this morning following reports that a motorist attempted to navigate a ford on the Mahurangi River.

  • The Sweep: Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle lose traction in the fast-moving water before being washed downstream.
  • The Location: The Mahurangi River, which runs through Warkworth and the surrounding rural areas, has been heavily impacted by the “torrential” rain currently battering the upper North Island.
  • Status: Neither the vehicle nor the occupant has been located as of 10:15 AM.

🚁 Search and Rescue Response

Police, Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ), and specialized swift-water rescue teams have been deployed to the scene.

  • Air Support: A rescue helicopter has been tasked to perform aerial sweeps of the riverbanks, though visibility remains poor due to the ongoing storm.
  • Ground Teams: LandSAR (Land Search and Rescue) teams are currently monitoring accessible points along the river, but the “extreme” flow of the water is making it too dangerous for divers to enter.
  • Police Warning: Authorities are pleading with the public to stay away from the area to allow emergency crews to work and to avoid further risk.

⚠️ Critical Safety Warning: DO NOT Cross Fords

Civil Defence and Police have issued an urgent reminder to all motorists in Northland, Auckland, and the Coromandel:

  1. Avoid Fords: Never attempt to cross a ford or flooded road, even if the water looks shallow.
  2. Turn Back: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float most passenger cars.
  3. Hidden Dangers: Floodwaters often hide washed-out road surfaces or heavy debris that can trap a vehicle instantly.
