PAKURANGA, AUCKLAND (January 9, 2026) — A devastating fire has ripped through Pita House, a beloved specialty grocer in East Auckland, leaving a family business in ruins. The blaze broke out at midday on Friday, coinciding exactly with a one-hour nationwide strike by professional firefighters, leading to a heated political row over public safety and emergency response times.

The specialty shop on Cortina Place, known for its Mediterranean breads and takeaway service, was described by the owner’s family as the “life’s work” of two brothers who operated the business seven days a week.

🔥 A Thirty-Minute Wait for Help

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) received the first alarm at 12:07 PM, just as professional crews began their industrial action. Because the nearest career station in Mt Wellington was on strike, volunteer crews had to be dispatched from as far away as Beachlands, Clevedon, and Waitakere.

  • Delayed Response: It took 30 minutes for the first volunteer crews to arrive at the scene. Under normal circumstances, professional crews from Mt Wellington would have arrived within seven minutes.
  • The Damage: By the time help arrived, thick black smoke and flames were already billowing from the roof, visible to motorists on the nearby Rā Hihi Flyover.
  • Casualties: St John confirmed that one person was transported to Middlemore Hospital in serious condition.

🏛️ Political Fallout: “Gambling with Lives”

The delay has sparked a fierce war of words between the government, FENZ, and the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU).

Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden slammed the union, stating, “Enough is enough. The NZPFU needs to stop gambling with people’s lives and safety and stop these strikes.”

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown echoed these sentiments, praising the volunteer firefighters who stepped up but accusing the union of “playing politics” with people’s livelihoods.

However, the NZPFU countered on social media, arguing that FENZ had the power to avert the strike at any time. “FENZ say they have contingencies. FENZ could have prevented this,” the union wrote, shifting the blame back onto management for the breakdown in negotiations.

💔 A Family Devastated

For the owners of Pita House, the political debate is secondary to the loss of their livelihood. Ahmed Reynolds-Hatem, the son of one of the owners, told 1News that his father and uncle were “workaholics” who built the business from the ground up.

“It’s going to be stressful, but he’ll be OK. We’ll sit in solace and eventually rebuild. That’s what we always do,” Reynolds-Hatem said. He noted the heartbreak of knowing the fire might have been contained within 10 minutes had professional crews been available.

🚌 Travel Disruption

Auckland Transport has confirmed that the fire has caused significant disruption to local travel:

  • Bus Route 70: Detouring through Gossamer Drive and Pakuranga Road.
  • Bus Route 711: Detouring through Lewis Road and Reeves Road.

The fire is currently under investigation, and FENZ remains on-site to monitor hot spots and prevent the blaze from spreading to a second neighboring property.
