DUBLIN / DHAKA (Sunday, January 18, 2026) — The brewing crisis surrounding the 2026 T20 World Cup has taken a fresh turn as Cricket Ireland officially broke its silence regarding a controversial proposal by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Following an emergency meeting in Dhaka yesterday (January 17) with ICC representatives, the BCB suggested a “Group Swap” to avoid playing on Indian soil. However, Ireland has firmly rejected any notion of moving, setting the stage for a three-way standoff between Bangladesh, Ireland, and the ICC.

🔄 The “Group Swap” Proposal Explained

Faced with domestic pressure and security concerns regarding travel to India, the BCB proposed a logistical switch to the ICC:

  • The Proposal: Move Bangladesh from Group C (based in India) to Group B (based in Sri Lanka).
  • The Trade: Move Ireland from Group B (Sri Lanka) to Group C (India) to take Bangladesh’s place.
  • The Goal: This would allow Bangladesh to play all their preliminary matches in Sri Lanka, avoiding India entirely.

🇮🇪 Ireland’s Defiant Response

Cricket Ireland has responded swiftly, making it clear they have no intention of surrendering their spot in the Sri Lankan leg of the tournament.

“We have received a definitive assurance that there will be no deviation from the original schedule prepared for the tournament,” an Irish Cricket official stated. “Ireland is confirmed to play its preliminary round matches in Sri Lanka as planned.”

Ireland is currently placed in Group B alongside powerhouse Australia, hosts Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Oman. The Irish board emphasized that their logistical preparations, fan travel, and high-performance plans are all centered on Sri Lankan conditions and will not be altered to accommodate the BCB’s standoff with India.

⚖️ The ICC’s Dilemma

With Bangladesh refusing to enter India (specifically for their scheduled matches in Kolkata and Mumbai) and Ireland refusing to swap out of Sri Lanka, the ICC is in a corner.

If the ICC forces Bangladesh to play in India, they risk a full-scale boycott from a major cricketing nation. However, forcing Ireland to move to India against their will could lead to legal and diplomatic repercussions within the sport’s governing body.
