TEHRAN / WASHINGTON — The Middle East stands on the edge of a major escalation as Iran has explicitly threatened to strike American military personnel and bases throughout the region. The warning comes in direct response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that his administration is “locked and loaded” to intervene in the wave of domestic protests currently sweeping the Islamic Republic.
⚠️ A Grave Warning from Tehran
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, issued a chilling directive on Friday, stating that all U.S. forces in the Middle East are now considered “legitimate targets.”
“The dishonourable president of America should know that with this official confession, all American centres and forces throughout the region will be our legitimate targets in response to any possible adventurism,” Ghalibaf said.
This sentiment was echoed by Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who warned that any “interventionist hand” reaching toward Iranian security would be “cut.”
🏛️ The “Locked and Loaded” Threat
The war of words was ignited by President Trump’s posts on Truth Social, where he vowed that the United States would “come to the rescue” of Iranian protesters if the regime continues its violent crackdown.
Trump’s Position:
- Military Readiness: Trump stated the U.S. is “ready to go” if peaceful protesters are killed.
- Missile Program: Following a meeting with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump warned he would “knock the hell” out of Iran if they attempted to rebuild their missile capabilities.
- Previous Strikes: The tension is heightened by the fact that it has been only seven months since U.S. bombers targeted Iranian nuclear facilities.
📉 Economic Crisis Fueling Unrest
The current protests, which began last Sunday, are primarily driven by a collapsing economy. Unlike the 2022 “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, these rallies stem from extreme financial hardship:
- Inflation: Annual inflation hit 42.2% in December, with food prices skyrocketing by 72%.
- Currency Collapse: The Iranian Rial has plummeted, with $1 USD now costing 1.34 million rials.
- Casualties: At least seven people have died as security forces use riot squads and live ammunition to quell the crowds.
🛡️ Clashes at Funerals and Religious Hubs
What began as shopkeepers protesting rising prices has evolved into a broader anti-regime movement.
- Funeral Flashpoints: Clashes broke out on Friday during burials in Marvdasht and Fouladshahr, where mourners chanted “Death to Khamenei.”
- Qom Protests: In a significant blow to the regime, protests erupted in the holy city of Qom, traditionally a stronghold of the clerical establishment.
- “Year of Blood”: Protesters in over a dozen cities were heard chanting, “This year is a year of blood, Seyyed Ali [Khamenei] will be overthrown.”
