HENDERSON, WEST AUCKLAND (January 9, 2026) — New details have emerged regarding a brazen shoplifting spree in West Auckland that ended with a round of applause from the public. A woman is now facing a string of charges after a chaotic attempt to steal from multiple retailers in Henderson yesterday afternoon.

The incident began at a local sports store, where the suspect allegedly attempted to walk out with $200 worth of baseball caps.

📍 The “Storm Off” and a Failed Disguise

According to Sergeant Rachael England of the Henderson Police, the situation escalated quickly when staff confronted the woman.

  • Abusive Encounter: After being challenged over the baseball caps, the woman reportedly “stormed off” while hurling abuse at store employees.
  • The Mall Maneuver: She then attempted to enter several other nearby stores. However, her erratic behavior had already put local retailers on high alert.
  • The “Rack” Strategy: In a desperate bid to shake off eyes, she entered another store and pulled an entire outfit off a rack, putting it on over her own clothes to create an instant disguise.

🔍 Deception and Barcode Swapping

The investigation revealed that the suspect’s tactics went beyond simple shoplifting.

  • Price Manipulation: While inside the second store, she was observed repositioning barcodes on two high-value items, attempting to make them appear significantly cheaper at the checkout—a tactic legally known as obtaining by deception.
  • The Arrest: The Henderson Beat Team had been tracking her movements through the shopping precinct. As she attempted to leave the store in her “new” outfit, officers moved in.

“The Henderson Beat Team was closing the net and tracked her… where they made the arrest as she attempted to leave,” said Sergeant England. The arrest was met with spontaneous applause from members of the public who witnessed the police intervention.

⚖️ Meth Utensils and Court Date

The situation worsened for the suspect during a subsequent police search. Officers discovered additional unpaid items tucked away, along with utensils used for consuming methamphetamine.

  • The Charges: The woman has been charged with:
    • Theft (multiple counts)
    • Obtaining by Deception (for the barcode tampering)
    • Possession of Methamphetamine Utensils
  • Court Appearance: She is scheduled to appear in the Waitākere District Court on January 14, 2026.

Sergeant England praised the local business community for their quick thinking, noting, “Retail theft isn’t a victimless crime, and we want to thank the retailers who called us so promptly.”
