Foodstuffs North Island Gets Green Light for New Zealand’s Largest Supermarket
AUCKLAND, NZ – June 25, 2025 – Foodstuffs North Island, New Zealand’s leading grocery cooperative, has secured resource consent from Auckland Council to construct what will become the country’s largest new supermarket. The ambitious project, a multi-million-dollar Pak’nSave store, is set to redefine the grocery landscape for North Island shoppers.
The colossal new supermarket will be located in Takapuna, near the prominent Esmonde Road motorway on-ramp. Spanning more than half a hectare, the development will significantly surpass Foodstuffs’ existing Pak’nSave at Highland Park, which opened earlier this year, establishing itself as the biggest in the nation.

While the exact opening date is yet to be announced, the approval marks a major step forward for Foodstuffs North Island’s ongoing investment into modernising and expanding its retail network. The new Takapuna Pak’nSave will feature an extensive ground-level footprint, complemented by an undercroft for most of its 197 planned car parking spaces, aiming to maximise convenience for a high volume of customers.
This strategic development underscores Foodstuffs’ commitment to enhancing the shopping experience and increasing capacity in a rapidly growing region. The investment of over $100 million in this single store highlights the scale of the project and its anticipated impact on local employment and the wider retail sector.
Foodstuffs North Island, a 100% New Zealand-owned co-operative, operates a network of New World, PAK’nSAVE, and Four Square stores. This new venture is part of a broader strategy to invest approximately $100 million annually into new builds and transformative upgrades across its North Island portfolio.
The decision to build such a significant store reflects the intense competition within New Zealand’s grocery market and the ongoing efforts by major players to offer more choice, convenience, and value to consumers. The Takapuna Pak’nSave is expected to be a flagship store, showcasing the latest in supermarket design and efficiency once completed.
