FAIRLIE / OTAGO (January 5, 2026) — In a miraculous turn of events that has captured the hearts of New Zealanders, Nala and Jock—the two dogs stolen along with a ute in Central Otago—have been found safe. The rescue featured a dramatic intervention by a member of the public who recognized the “social media stars” while the thief was attempting to transport them on a bicycle.

Owners Jacob Nolan and Shaid Jackson say they are “beyond relieved” after a grueling 48-hour search that saw the South Island community unite in a massive digital manhunt.

🚲 The Heroic Rescue: A Bike, a Ute, and a Quick-Thinking Kiwi

The recovery of the dogs sounds like a scene from a movie. While the stolen white Holden Colorado was found abandoned by police at 1:30 AM, the dogs were initially missing.

The breakthrough came at 6:30 AM this morning:

  • The Sight: A member of the public in Fairlie spotted a man struggling to ride a bicycle while balancing two dogs.
  • The Recognition: Thinking the man needed help, the citizen offered him a ride. Once they were in the vehicle, the rescuer instantly recognized Nala and Jock from the viral social media posts.
  • The Confrontation: Upon realizing he was transporting stolen “cargo,” the rescuer reportedly forced the thief out of the vehicle and drove the dogs directly to the Fairlie Veterinary Clinic.
  • The Arrest: Police have since confirmed that the suspect has been apprehended.

🥩 Venison and Treats Await the “Babies”

Shaid Jackson confirmed that both Nala (a 5-year-old blue heeler) and Jock (a 9-year-old black Huntaway cross) are in good shape.

“They are currently being treated at the vets—but are in good shape considering what they’ve been through,” Jackson said. She is already preparing a hero’s welcome at home, planning a trip to New World for treats and defrosting venison for their first meal back.

🚨 A Rare “Best-Case” Outcome

Sergeant Regan Price of the Otago Police noted that finding both a stolen vehicle and missing pets is an exceptionally rare outcome. The saga began in Omakau on Saturday when Nolan’s ute was taken while he was visiting friends—a theft police linked to an earlier burglary in Alexandra.

The couple expressed their deep gratitude to the thousands of people who shared their appeal. “We can’t thank people enough—from the people who went out relentlessly searching to every single person who called in sightings,” Jackson said. “Honestly, speechless this morning.”
