“Catastrophic” Fire Risk: Australia Braces for Peak Heatwave as Temperatures Hit 49°C
By Lions Roar News International Desk
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (January 9, 2026) — Australia is facing a perilous environmental crisis today as a relentless heatwave reaches its peak, triggering “catastrophic” fire ratings and the closure of hundreds of schools. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has warned that almost every state and territory—with the exception of Queensland—is currently under the grip of extreme temperatures that are expected to last for several days.
🔥 Victoria on High Alert: Schools Closed
In the state of Victoria, authorities have declared a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating—the highest level on the scale—for today, Friday, January 9.
- Mass Closures: Approximately 450 schools and childcare centers have been ordered to close across the state to ensure the safety of students and staff.
- The “Perfect Storm”: BoM meteorologist Angus Hines warned that strengthening winds, combined with “dry lightning” (thunderstorms with little to no rain), are creating the perfect conditions for uncontrollable bushfires in Northern Victoria.
- Evacuation Advice: Emergency Management Commissioner Rick Nugent (acting on behalf of the department) urged residents in high-risk zones to leave early. “If you are in a catastrophic risk area, your safest option is to move to a lower-risk zone now,” authorities stated.
🌡️ Record-Breaking Temperatures
The heatwave has already shattered recent records across the continent:
- Western Australia: Coastal towns have recorded blistering highs of 49°C.
- Melbourne: Experienced its hottest day in six years on Thursday, peaking at 40.9°C.
- Sydney: Temperatures are forecast to soar to 42°C on Saturday as the heat moves East.
- Adelaide & Perth: Both cities are expected to remain consistently above the 40°C mark throughout the weekend.
🚒 Firefighters Battle Blazes
Emergency crews are already stretched thin. On Thursday, firefighters battled multiple blazes across Victoria and New South Wales. In a significant operation near the town of Wodonga, water-bombing aircraft were deployed to contain a large fire that threatened property and livestock.
⚠️ Public Safety Warning: The Four-Level Scale
Authorities are reminding citizens to understand the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS), which consists of four levels:
- Catastrophic (Highest Risk: Leave immediately)
- Extreme
- High
- Moderate
“We need the public to play their part alongside emergency services to protect lives and property,” said Victoria’s Emergency Management leadership.
