AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (January 2, 2026) — New Zealand Customs has issued a sharp warning to the public following a surge in sophisticated card-skimming equipment being smuggled into the country. Organized criminal groups are increasingly using everyday household items—specifically air fryers, used laptops, and TV antennas—to hide devices designed to steal bank details from unsuspecting Kiwis.

Chief Customs Officer Nigel Barnes confirmed that these transnational syndicates are highly agile, often hiding skimming kits in low-value electronics to bypass border security. Once inside the country, these devices are installed on ATMs, parking meters, and self-service petrol pumps to clone cards and drain bank accounts.

📦 The “Kitchen Appliance” Cover

In a recent high-profile case, a 21-year-old Auckland man was sentenced after Customs intercepted packages containing air fryers that were actually “hollowed out” to transport skimming hardware.

Inside the Smuggling Operation:

  • Tactics: Equipment was mailed to fictitious names at parcel collection lockers throughout Auckland to avoid direct detection.
  • The Loot: Investigations revealed that just two individuals successfully withdrew over $60,400 from victims, with another $21,500 in attempted transactions.
  • Tools of the Trade: A raid on a suspect’s home uncovered cash-counting machines, retail rewards cards loaded with stolen bank data, and specialized card-reading software.

🏧 Beyond the ATM: New Targets

While bank ATMs remain a target, scammers are pivoting to less-monitored “point-of-purchase” terminals.

  • Petrol Stations: Self-service pumps are being targeted with “internal skimmers” that are nearly impossible to see from the outside.
  • Parking Machines: Hospital and city council parking meters have been found with tampered card slots.
  • Unattended Terminals: Any machine where you swipe or insert a card without a staff member present is now considered a higher risk.

🛡️ How to “Skim-Proof” Your Wallet

Banking experts and Customs suggest four essential habits to protect your money:

  1. The “Wiggle” Test: Before inserting your card, give the card reader a firm tug. If it feels loose, crooked, or looks like a different color than the rest of the machine, do not use it.
  2. The Hand Shield: Always cover the keypad with your free hand while typing your PIN. Scammers often hide tiny “pinhole” cameras above the keypad to record your fingers.
  3. Use Tap-and-Go: Contactless payments (PayWave, Apple Pay, Google Pay) are significantly harder to skim than magnetic stripe swipes or card insertions.
  4. Monitor Small Charges: Scammers often test a card with a $0.50 or $1.00 transaction before draining the account. Report any unrecognized small charges immediately.
