AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (January 3, 2026) — A dramatic lightning strike sparked a roof fire at a residential property in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn on Friday evening, as a wave of intense thunderstorms swept through the region.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) responded to the two-storey house on Home Street at approximately 5:40 PM after lightning pierced the roof, causing a blaze to spread through the upper structure.

🚒 Emergency Response and Casualties

The strike occurred during the height of a MetService severe thunderstorm watch that had residents on high alert across the city.

  • The Fire: Three fire stations were dispatched to the scene. Crews managed to contain the fire to the roof area, preventing it from consuming the entire two-storey villa.
  • Medical Attention: Hato Hone St John attended the scene to assist the residents. One person was treated for minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
  • Investigation: A fire investigator has been called in to assess the extent of the structural damage, though lightning has been confirmed as the definitive cause.

⛈️ North Island Weekend Weather Outlook

While the immediate threat to Auckland has subsided, the New Year’s stormy weather is far from over for the rest of the North Island. MetService has shifted its focus to the East Coast as a slow-moving front continues its track.

Active Heavy Rain Warnings (Orange): | Region | Duration | Expected Impact | | :— | :— | :— | | Gisborne / Tairāwhiti | 11:00 AM Sat – 11:00 AM Sun | Up to 150mm of rain; rapid river rises possible. | | Hawke’s Bay (North of Napier) | 7:00 AM Sat – Sunday Morning | Heavy falls and localized thunderstorms. |

Residents in these areas are urged to stay indoors during the peak of the storm and avoid unnecessary travel, as surface flooding and slips are highly likely given the saturated ground from previous New Year’s Eve rain.
