AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (January 1, 2026) – Auckland has officially led the world into 2026 with a massive pyrotechnic display from the Sky Tower, as thousands of revellers packed the city centre and waterfront to witness the highest display in the Southern Hemisphere.
The evening kicked off at 9:00 PM with a touching “laser and projection” show. For the first time, SkyCity featured “special moments” submitted by the public across the tower’s shaft, showcasing everything from first smiles and milestone birthdays to personal triumphs of 2025.
💥 The Midnight Moment: By the Numbers
As the clock struck midnight, the city erupted in a five-minute show that turned the Sky Tower into a 360-degree beacon of light.
The firepower behind the show included:
- 3,500 individual shots fired from three different levels of the tower.
- 500kg of fireworks used throughout the five-minute performance.
- 80 metres: The height to which fireworks soared above the structure.
- 320 metres: The total combined height reached above ground level.
The logistical feat was six months in the making, requiring 1.6 tonnes of equipment, 14 kilometres of cabling, and more than 1,500 computer-controlled cues to ensure every burst was perfectly timed.
🌉 A City Synchronised
The festivities weren’t limited to the Sky Tower. The Auckland Harbour Bridge joined the party with its own dynamic light and sound show. Both landmarks were perfectly synchronised to a custom MoreFM playlist featuring the biggest hits of 2025, creating an immersive experience for those on the ground.
Top Vantage Points
While crowds were shoulder-to-shoulder on Federal Street and the Viaduct, thousands more sought elevated views from the city’s historic maunga:
- Maungawhau / Mt Eden
- Maungauika / North Head
- Takarunga / Mt Victoria
For those celebrating at home, the event was broadcast live on TVNZ 1 and TVNZ 2, and streamed globally via TVNZ+ and SkyCity’s digital platforms.
