AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (January 10, 2026) — New Zealanders are facing a weekend of extreme weather contrasts as a “classic summer weekend” in the North Island collides with severe gale warnings and torrential rain in the South. With 14 towns currently under heat alerts and temperatures predicted to soar near 40°C in some areas, authorities are warning of a “perfect storm” for wildfire risks.

MetService suggests that records could “roll” this weekend as the country grapples with two simultaneous weather systems.

🔥 Scorching Temperatures & Heat Alerts

Heat alerts have been triggered for 14 towns and cities today. While much of the South Island swelters, the North Island is seeing even higher peaks.

  • Hottest Spots: Hastings is forecast to hit 35°C today, climbing to a staggering 38°C on Sunday—nearly 13°C above average.
  • South Island Alerts: Motueka, Blenheim, Kaikōura, and Christchurch are all expected to hit or exceed 30°C.
  • North Island Alerts: Paihia, Whangārei, Tauranga, Napier, and Masterton are among those bracing for high-intensity heat.

💨 Severe Gale & Heavy Rain Warnings

As the “nor’westers” drive temperatures up, they are also bringing dangerous winds and heavy precipitation to the western and high-country regions.

  • Wind Hazards: An Orange Strong Wind Warning is in place for Canterbury High Country (gusts up to 130 km/h) starting tonight. Wellington, Wairarapa, and Tararua are also under Orange warnings starting Sunday morning, with gusts of 120 km/h expected.
  • Deluge in the West: Westland and Fiordland are under Orange Heavy Rain Warnings. Forecasters predict up to 300mm of rain could fall over a 30-hour period starting late tonight.
  • Watches in Place: Heavy rain and wind watches cover much of the rest of the South Island, including Otago, Southland, and Stewart Island.

🚫 Fire Danger: The “Perfect Storm”

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has issued a dire warning, stating that the combination of extreme heat, low humidity, and high winds creates the ideal conditions for catastrophic wildfires.

  • High-Risk Zones: Canterbury, Marlborough, Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, Tai Rāwhiti, and Northland.
  • Canterbury Restrictions: All fire permits in Canterbury are suspended until 8:00 AM Monday.
  • Total Bans: Many regions are now in “Red Zones,” meaning a total fire ban is in effect. Kiwis are urged to visit checkitsalright.nz to check local restrictions.
