BOSTON, USA (Sunday, February 1, 2026) — New Zealand’s 16-year-old middle-distance sensation Sam Ruthe has sent shockwaves through the global athletics community after shattering the U18 world record for the mile.

Competing at the prestigious John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University, Ruthe clocked an incredible 3:48.88, becoming the youngest person in history to break the 3-minute 50-second barrier. In doing so, he also eclipsed a New Zealand national record held by the legendary Sir John Walker for 44 years.

🏃‍♂️ A Legend’s Record Falls

Sir John Walker’s time of 3:49.08, set in Oslo in 1982, has stood as the gold standard for Kiwi milers for decades. While indoor and outdoor tracks are traditionally recorded separately by World Athletics due to differences in track size (200m vs. 400m), Ruthe’s performance on the Boston boards is being hailed as one of the greatest feats in New Zealand sporting history.

  • World Ranking: Ruthe’s time is the 11th fastest indoor mile ever run by an athlete of any age.
  • The Ingebrigtsen Gap: He remains just 3.70 seconds shy of the senior world record held by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
  • Pure Talent: This was Ruthe’s first-ever race on an indoor track, as New Zealand does not have any full-size indoor facilities.

✈️ Defying the “50-Hour Travel” Fatigue

Remarkably, Ruthe only arrived in the United States three days prior to the race following an grueling 50-hour journey from New Zealand.

“My legs were feeling heavy a bit before this,” Ruthe told the track broadcast. “I was expecting to run sub 3:55… I think I can be running faster, but I am super stoked with that.”

The race took a dramatic turn when Ruthe’s training partner and fellow Kiwi star Sam Tanner was forced to withdraw mid-race due to an Achilles injury. Ruthe, who had planned to sit behind Tanner, took the lead in the final lap and stormed to a comfortable victory.
