ADELAIDE/SYDNEY (Saturday, January 31, 2026) — Southeast Australia is enduring the final, sweltering day of an unprecedented eight-day heatwave that has seen temperatures climb to an official 50.0°C—the furthest south that such a temperature has ever been recorded on the continent.

While a long-awaited “southerly buster” has begun to cool the southern coastline, the interior remains trapped under a “heat dome” that has rewritten the Australian record books this week.

🌡️ Historic 50°C Benchmark Reached

For only the eighth and ninth times in official history, Australia recorded temperatures of 50.0°C or higher this week.

  • The Record Breaker: Port Augusta (SA) hit 50.0°C on Friday, making history as the southernmost point to reach the half-century mark.
  • Andamooka (SA): Also reached 50.0°C on Thursday, marking the first time in four years any Australian station has hit the 50°C milestone.
  • The Comparison: Prior to this week, 50°C had only been recorded in South Australia during the infamous 1960 heatwave.

🔥 A Final Day of Sweltering Inland Heat

The “heat dome”—a mass of hot air trapped by high pressure—is delivering its final blow to inland New South Wales and Queensland today.

  • NSW Forecasts: Ivanhoe is bracing for a potential record-shattering 49°C, while Wilcannia and Menindee are expected to hit 48°C and 47°C respectively.
  • Queensland: The mercury is set to soar to 46°C in Thargomindah and Birdsville.
  • Western Sydney: While the coast stays near 30°C, Western Sydney is expected to reach 38°C, with the Hunter Valley hitting 43°C.

🌬️ The Great Cooling: Drops of up to 18°C

Relief is moving north. A cold front from the Southern Ocean is set to displace the heat dome over the next 48 hours.

  • Immediate Relief: Southern Victoria and coastal SA have already felt the change. In Seymour (VIC), the temperature is expected to plummet from 39°C to 21°C—an 18-degree drop in just 24 hours.
  • Overnight Changes: Regions like Renmark (SA) should see temperatures fall from the low 40s to a manageable 21°C by midnight tonight.
  • The Final Holdouts: Northern inland NSW and southwest Queensland will suffer through one more night above 30°C before the southerly change arrives late Sunday.
