WASHINGTON D.C. (Saturday, January 31, 2026) — The United States Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Pakistan, urging American citizens to “reconsider travel” due to significant concerns regarding crime, civil unrest, terrorism, and the risk of abduction.

Pakistan remains under a Level 3 travel advisory, indicating a high risk of terrorist attacks that can occur without warning. The updated guidance emphasizes that ordinary targets for these attacks include “transportation hubs, hotels, markets, shopping malls, military and security installations, airports, railways, schools, hospitals, places of worship, tourist locations, and government buildings.”

🚫 “Do Not Travel” to High-Risk Zones

Several areas within Pakistan have been designated as Level 4: Do Not Travel, the highest warning level issued by the State Department. These include:

  • Parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province: Specifically areas bordering Afghanistan and former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
  • Balochistan province: Due to heightened risks of terrorism and kidnapping.

The advisory explicitly warns US citizens against traveling to Level 4 regions “for any reason,” highlighting that attempts at assassinations and abductions targeting both government officials and private citizens are common in these areas.

⚠️ Risks for US Citizens, Including Those of Pakistani Origin

The State Department underscored that these security concerns apply to all American citizens, including those of Pakistani descent, who may be perceived as high-value targets.

  • Terrorism: There is a persistent threat from various militant and terrorist groups operating throughout the country.
  • Civil Unrest: Political demonstrations and protests can quickly turn violent and lead to civil disturbances.
  • Crime & Abduction: Kidnappings for ransom and other violent crimes remain a significant threat, particularly in remote areas and regions with poor security infrastructure.

Travelers Advised to Exercise Extreme Caution:

For those who must travel to Pakistan, the State Department provides detailed recommendations:

  1. Enroll in STEP: Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and locate you in an emergency.
  2. Stay Vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in public places and tourist locations.
  3. Avoid Demonstrations: Steer clear of large gatherings, demonstrations, and protests, as they can escalate unpredictably.
  4. Security Plans: Have a personal security plan in place and always inform a trusted contact of your travel itinerary.
  5. Review Protocols: Review personal security plans and ensure they are current.
