KANDY, SRI LANKA (Sunday, January 25, 2026) — The Government of Sri Lanka has officially announced that the State Vesak Festival for 2026 will be held on May 30.

The decision was confirmed by the Minister of State Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Professor Chandana Abeyratne, during a meeting with the Most Venerable Mahanayake Theros of the Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters. The move comes after a formal intervention by the leadership of the three main Buddhist sects regarding the alignment of the lunar calendar.

📅 Correcting the Lunar Alignment

The adjustment follows a letter sent by the Mahanayake Theros to the President, pointing out that the “Visa” nakatha (lunar mansion) does not fall on May 1st.

  • The Mismatch: While some calendars initially marked early May for the festival, the High Priests advised that May 1st would be astrologically inappropriate for the observance of Vesak Poya.
  • Presidential Intervention: Acting on the President’s instructions, the Poya Committee convened to review the religious and astronomical data, reaching a consensus to shift the state celebrations to the end of the month.

🏛️ Ministerial Confirmation

Professor Chandana Abeyratne briefed the media, stating that the government is committed to following the recommendations of the Poya Committee and the requests of the Buddhist clergy to ensure the sanctity of the event.

“Based on the recommendations of the Poya Committee and considering the request made by the Mahanayake Theros of the three sects, we have decided to hold the State Vesak Festival on May 30th,” the Minister noted.

🌸 What to Expect

Vesak is the most significant religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Lord Buddha. The state festival typically involves large-scale religious programs, lantern displays (Vesak Thoran), and “Dansal” (alms-giving stalls) across the island, with the primary state ceremony being hosted in a selected regional district.
