AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (Friday, January 23, 2026) — A high-speed pursuit on Auckland’s Southern Motorway ended in a serious crash late Thursday night after a motorcyclist collided with a traffic attenuator truck and struck a concrete barrier.

The Serious Crash Unit (SCU) is now leading an investigation into the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:15 PM after the rider reportedly failed to stop for motorway patrol officers.

🛣️ The Roadblock and Impact

Witnesses at the scene described a massive police and emergency response as the motorway was effectively shut down to manage the wreckage.

  • The Setup: Traffic attenuator trucks (safety vehicles designed to absorb impacts) had established a roadblock, diverting all southbound traffic off the motorway at East Tamaki.
  • The Crash: The motorcyclist, traveling at high speed while attempting to evade police, slammed into one of the stationary attenuator trucks before losing control and hitting the motorway barrier.
  • Traffic Gridlock: Vehicles already caught on the motorway were slowly turned around by police and escorted back to the Ōtara on-ramp to clear the area for investigators.

🎥 Captured on Camera

In a notable twist, the entire incident was reportedly captured by a television crew.

  • Motorway Patrol Filming: A camera operator from Greenstone TV was filming alongside motorway patrol units for a new series of the popular show Motorway Patrol when the crash happened.
  • Evidence Gathering: Detectives were seen taking statements from the camera crew, and police were observed holding a speed radar device, suggesting that the speed of the pursuit will be a key focus of the investigation.

🚑 Emergency Response and Other Fatalities

While the status of the motorcyclist has not been officially updated beyond “serious,” St John confirmed an ambulance and operations manager were dispatched to the scene.

Tragically, this incident was part of a dark night on New Zealand roads:

  • Dannevirke: A cyclist died early this morning on State Highway 2 after a fatal crash.
  • Christchurch: As previously reported, an e-scooter rider was killed by a train in Addington at 3:30 AM.
