Legends Collide: Black Clash 2026 Hits Bay Oval as Cricket and Rugby Greats Face Off
By Lions Roar News Sports Desk
TAURANGA, NZ (Saturday, January 17, 2026) — The sporting rivalry of the summer reaches its peak tonight as the Hot Spring Spas T20 Black Clash returns to Bay Oval Stadium. Kick-off (or first ball) is set for 6:30 PM, and the atmosphere in Mt Maunganui is already electric.
Now in its eighth year, this crossover spectacle pits former and current All Blacks against Black Caps legends in a high-stakes, high-entertainment T20 cricket match. Since its debut in 2019, the event has not only become a staple of the New Zealand summer but has also raised millions for various charities.
🏏 Team Cricket vs. 🏉 Team Rugby: The History
Team Cricket currently holds the upper hand in this cross-code battle, having secured five wins out of the seven previous encounters. However, Team Rugby is known for their “never say die” attitude and some surprisingly technical cricket skills.
Last year’s clash at Hagley Oval in Christchurch saw Team Cricket dominate, but with the event rotating to the sunny Bay of Plenty, Team Rugby is looking to close the gap in the overall series standings.
📋 The 2026 Lineups
This year’s rosters are a “who’s who” of New Zealand sporting greatness, featuring World Cup winners, international stars, and even a few wildcard personalities.
Team Rugby (Led by Kieran Read)
The rugby boys are bringing some serious heat this year, including current All Black Jordie Barrett and—most interestingly—Black Caps test legend Tim Southee, who is crossing the floor to join the oval-ball specialists.
- Squad: Kieran Read (c), Jordie Barrett, Kaylum Boshier, Andy Ellis, David Hill, Michael Hussey, Ngani Laumape, Colin Slade, Tim Southee, Jason Spice, Ofisa Tonu’u, and Joey Wheeler.
Team Cricket (Led by Nathan McCullum)
The cricket specialists are stacked with heavy hitters and pace, featuring the likes of “The Hairy Javelin” Neil Wagner and the همیشه-reliable Grant Elliott.
- Squad: Nathan McCullum (c), Neil Broome, Grant Elliott, Hamish Marshall, Kyle Mills, Hadleigh Parkes, Adam Parore, Jesse Ryder, Lou Vincent, Neil Wagner, and William Waiirua.
🎉 Beyond the Boundary
The Black Clash is as much about the fans as it is about the players. Bay Oval is expected to be a sea of costumes, with supporters encouraged to dress up for the occasion.
- Atmosphere: Expect celebrity cameos, family-friendly zones, and plenty of “banter” between the players on the boundary.
- Charity: A portion of the proceeds from tonight’s match will continue the tradition of supporting local New Zealand charities.
