Sri Lanka Officially Launches Education Digitalization Project with Chinese Support

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (Wednesday, January 14, 2026) — The Government of Sri Lanka has officially launched a major initiative to digitalize the national education system, fueled by a significant grant from the People’s Republic of China. Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, inaugurated the program today at the Ministry of Education premises, “Isurupaya.”
The project aims to dismantle digital inequalities among schools and ensure that every student, regardless of their location, has access to equal educational opportunities through modern technology.
🤝 Bilateral Agreement and Safety Framework
The official agreement was signed by the Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, Nalaka Kaluwewa, and the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, H.E. Qi Zhenhong.

The digitalization program is set to transform the classroom experience through several high-tech components:

Dr. Amarasuriya highlighted that the primary goal of these reforms is to identify schools currently facing digital disadvantages. By upgrading their infrastructure, the government intends to provide a “level playing field” for all Sri Lankan children.
“In implementing education reforms, developing digital infrastructure in schools is a target factor,” the Prime Minister stated. She noted that the use of AI and cloud technology marks a significant leap forward in the country’s educational evolution.
