“Perfect Storm”: Extreme Heatwave to Send Hastings Skyrocketing to 37°C This Weekend
By Lions Roar News Weather & Public Safety Desk
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (January 8, 2026) — New Zealand is bracing for a scorching weekend as a massive heatwave currently sweltering across south-eastern Australia prepares to blanket the East Coast. MetService is warning that temperatures in some regions could hit their highest levels in years, creating a “perfect storm” for wildfires.
Hastings is expected to be the national hotspot, with forecasts predicting a staggering 37°C on Sunday.
🌡️ Regional Heat Outlook: Where it’s Hottest
The heat is being driven by hot air crossing the Tasman after Melbourne and Adelaide recorded their hottest days in six years (hitting 41°C and 43°C respectively).
- North Island Hotspots: Hastings (37°C), Wairoa, Gisborne, and East Cape are all set to soar past 30°C.
- South Island Peaks: Christchurch, Kaikoura, and Timaru will see a steady climb, comfortably exceeding 30°C throughout the weekend.
- Tropical Nights: MetService meteorologist Clare O’Connor warns that temperatures won’t drop significantly at night, which can lead to heat exhaustion and severe sleep disruption.
🔥 Fire Alert: “No Fireworks, No Mowing”
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has issued a dire warning, particularly for the Hawke’s Bay region, where humidity could drop below 20%.
“Conditions are really going to ramp up… Incoming winds and hot temperatures create the perfect storm,” says Wildfire Manager Tim Mitchell.
FENZ is urging the public to avoid the following high-risk activities this weekend:
- No Outdoor Fires: Complete fire restrictions are in place.
- No Fireworks: Keep them locked away.
- Avoid Machinery: Avoid using lawnmowers, chainsaws, grinders, or welders, as a single spark could ignite dry grass instantly.
- Marlborough Warning: Mayor Nadine Taylor noted that Wither Hills Farm Park may close if the risk escalates further.
🏖️ Beach Safety: East vs. West
With thousands expected to flock to the coast, Surf Lifesaving’s Chris Emmet is preparing for a “swarm” of beachgoers.
- Auckland Advice: If you are in Auckland, the East Coast beaches (like Mission Bay or Orewa) are generally safer this weekend than the volatile West Coast (Piha/Muriwai).
- Swim Between Flags: Lifeguards will be patrolling from 10 AM to 6 PM, with some extending hours for large crowds.
- Vulnerable Groups: Hastings Mayor Wendy Schollum reminds residents to check on the elderly, infants, and toddlers, who are most at risk of heatstroke.
